Training consoles in the simulator room |
A Blog for Southern California Pilots. Click on an airport for photos, approach notes, and HD Video clips. Hopefully these images will help give a sight picture to any new flyers to these airports. This was my 11 year adventure in the heavens. Your feedback is welcome, I would love to hear from you!
Inside SOCAL TRACON...
Inside the busiest TRACON in the world. We went down to MCAS Miramar near San Diego and took a tour along with fellow AOPA pilots. SOCAL TRACON handles one of the most congested airspace in the world including Arrivals and Departures for LAX, Ontario, San Diego, Santa Ana, Long Beach, Burbank, and everything in-between. After the Power Point presentation, you get broken up into your home airports sectors, plug in a headset' and sit beside a controller and watch them work. You can even go to the training room, and "pretend" to be a controller in their simulators, and get a real feel of what it's like. It's truly amazing what they do. They are very calm, professional, and do an awesome job.

Not sure how old this post is, but just to let you know... it is called Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (MCAS Miramar)
ReplyDeletenot naval. Ran by Marines, not sailors.
Marines...who all work in the Department of the Navy and report to a sailor known as the Secretary of the Navy. ;-)
DeleteAlthough the Marine Corps and Navy both report to the same civilian Secretary, otherwise they are separate organizations and Marine Corps bases are not Naval bases. Operationally, Marines (and Sailors) report to their Combatant Commands which report directly to the President - the Secretary of the Navy is not even in the chain.
DeleteIt's clearly from a while ago when NAS Miramar was indeed staffed by Sailors and hosted the TopGun Squadrons.
