Flying to Big Bear

Eastbound 210 over Fontana area at 5,500'

Keller Peak, Mt. San Gorgonio & Mt. San Jacinto way in the back, still snow in May
Arriving at Big Bear Lake from 9,500'

Snow Summit Ski area, with Bear Mountain in the distance

Big Bear Airport, joining the downwind leg

 Barnstorm Restaurant

Departing to the West over Big Bear Lake
Snow Valley, Keller Peak, Mt. San Gorgonio

The slow way up, Highway 330 from San Bernadino

We went for a burger run up to Big Bear.  We followed the 210 fwy eastbound and climbed up to 9,500'
Socal Approach handed us off to the CTAF frequency about 10 miles from the airport.  It was a great day for flying, a very smooth ride crossing the ridges, amazing to still see snow this late in the year.  Barnstorm Restaurant is a great place to eat and watch the planes.  They want you to avoid overflying the schools and the outbound altitude recommended is 8,500'  Field elevation is 6,750' but density altitude, especially in the summer, can exeed 9,000!

Fying around Downtown and over to Upland

 Downtown Los Angeles

 Santa Anita Racetrack

Still snow on Mt. Baldy in May!

Maniac Mike's Cafe

We flew out to Cable Airport (KCCB) to visit my nephew.   Brian shot some great photos.  We did a quick orbit around downtown LA on the way out there.   We flew at 2000' to stay underneath the Bravo and made a presence on the "025" channel in which the helos frequent as they are down at these lower altitudes.   Nobody was around.   We then headed over to Cable airport near Upland and Claremont.  Cable is an untowered airport sandwiched between Ontairo's and Bracket's airpace. We went up the Pasadena fwy and followed the 210 East, eventually transitioning through El Monte and Bracket's Class D.  Bracket gave us a heads up that no target were over Cable before handing us off to the Unicom.  We approached from the north and overflew the "6" before joining the left downwind for runway 24.    Transient parking using wheel chalks is next to the tetrahedron.  The patio at "Maniac Mike's Cafe has a nice view of the airport and there was still snow on Mt. Baldy.   You have to do left climbing turns when you depart Runway 24 due to the ajoining Ontario Class C airspace if you want to go in a northeast or northwest direction.
